Brahms wrote his unique and powerful Four Songs in 1859-60 for the Hamburg Women’s Chorus which he co-founded and conducted, drawing from poems including Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Fauré’s deeply moving Requiem brings consummate craftsmanship and grace together with intense spirituality to close the concert.
